Day 2 - Keynote
Keynote Presentation: Mr Seán Ó Grádaigh Lecturer in Digital Education, School of Education, National University of Ireland, Galway, Ireland. "The Book of the Future: working with trainee teachers to produce eBooks in two languages - English and Irish"

Picture
Our invited keynote speaker is Seán Ó Grádaigh

With a background in second level teaching (Gaeilge, Geography & History) and educational technologies, Seán is currently employed as a lecturer in education in the School of Education, National University of Ireland, Galway.

In 2013, Seán developed and coordinated the first fully integrated 1:1 mobile device deployment on an initial teacher education programme in Europe. His model integrated iPad technology in every element of the programme from using video reflection of practice to piloting remote and mobile tutor visits. In 2015 the ‘MGO’ Initial Teacher Education programme was received the ‘Apple Distinguished Program’ award. was awarded

Day 2 - Workshop presentations

Using mobile technologies to transform teaching in science and maths
(Greg Hughes, Assistant principal, De Ferrers School, UK)

This workshop will explore how science and maths teachers are using iTunes U and apps such as Explain Everything, Showbie, Socrative to transform the way in which lessons work. The focus will be on getting delegates to try these as hands-on AFL activities. Delegates will be shown  the de Ferrers digital workflow, how we use iTunes U as our learning hub, how Socrative can measure progress in Maths & Science and the value of animations in modelling STEM thinking.
We will also  look at some of the digital books/resources that we are creating for students at the school.

Delegates will need access to an  iPad (it could be shared with a colleague) with the following apps (all free apart from the last one):
  • Showbie
  • Socrative (student)
  • iTunes U
  • Popplet Lite
  • Google classroom
  • Explain Everything (this is not free) (see also the workshop by Paul Hopkins - below)

Using widgets to make your books and learning interactive
(Cora Vries-Kloet and Ted van Deutokom (Lentiz Onderwijsgroep, Netherlands) and Niels Vanspauwen, Co-Founder, BookWidgets: interactive learning)

Picture

This workshop will enable participants to make their  own interactive exercises and activities which students can use on their iPad, Chromebook, tablet or PC. You'll learn how to embed these exercises in an iBooks Author book, as well as use them standalone.
You will play the role of the teacher as well as the student, and you'll learn how you can review, grade and provide feedback on student work. All of this will be done using the BookWidgets software.

Cora Vries-Kloet and Ted van Deutokom are teachers at the Lentiz Onderwijsgroep, Netherlands where they have pioneered the use of the flipped classroom model in a range of subjects including Physics and Chemistry.
Niels Vanspauwen co-founded BookWidgets together with Xavier Van Elsacker to put teachers in the driving seat of the digital classroom. Engaged students learn better, faster & gain a deeper understanding, and tablets can be a great way to pull students closer. Teachers are best placed to unlock this educational potential, by creating their own interactive learning material.

Maried to a teacher and a father of 3 kids, Niels has a strong interest in changing education for the better by making mobile technology simple and efficient for teachers and students.

When he's not working, Niels is typically playing with his kids or enjoying the company of his wife.

Creating multilingual iBooks
(Seán Ó Grádaigh, School of Education, National University of Ireland, Galway, Ireland.)

In 2015 the ‘MGO’ Initial Teacher Education programme was received the ‘Apple Distinguished Program’ award. was awarded

The programme places a particular emphasis on content creation where students author and publish curricular iBooks and iTunesU courses. A case study on the MGO programme is now live on the Apple Education website: http://www.apple.com/education/ipad/teach-withipad/classroom/student-authors/
Seán has a number Multi-Touch book publications available on line for download https://itunes.apple.com/ie/book/geography-field-investigation/id716558730?mt=13

Seán is an Apple Distinguished Educator (Class of 2013) and provides Apple Professional Development (APD) training to schools nationwide and across Europe. He acts as a consultant for Apple Education Europe, and has presented on ALT Europe (Apple Learning Tour).

He also has a keen interest in Development Education. Seán initiated the inaugural Development Education Day in NUI Galway and has worked on development projects in Bosnia, Kenya, Malawi and most recently deployed iPads for education in Burkina Faso West Africa.

SADLY THIS WORKSHOP WAS CANCELLED DUE TO SEAN'S TRAVEL PROBLEMS.

EduQuest - online App creating editor for tours and quests
(Ulf Kerber, PH Karlsruhe / Holger Mügge QuestMill)

Picture
EduQuest is a project run by the University of Bonn Spin Off QuestMill and the University of Education Karlsruhe. It aims to develop and implement pedagogical widgets for higher learning in geo-referenced, map-based tours, quest and quizzes on a mobile device. EduQuest uses the GeoQuest online editor, that allows users (teachers/students) to create in-app-tours and stand-alone-apps. With the help of the editor and the widget modules, you can build a true mobile LMS system for either instructional or individual learning products. The workshop shows you the project milestones and lets you work and create your own tour using the GeoQuest editor (Please bring your Laptop and mobile devices).

The best ever app for assessment? - Explain Everything
(Paul Hopkins, The University of Hull)

Picture
There are over a million apps - how do we decide which of these we are going to use for school, especially if this means spending money! We need to make decisions based on good pedagogic principles. Many of the apps on the education market offer information or “drill and practice” methods.

Explain Everything is different as it allows the user to create, "artefacts of understanding". These can be made by the teacher, to offer support and learning to the child - offering a real sense of personalisation; or these can be made by the pupil offering opportunities for the child to demonstrate their learning and understanding, to “explain everything” to their teacher.

This session will look at this app and explore how it can be used in the classroom using Bloom as a pedagogic framework and drawing on the work of Fullan and Langworthy from 'A rich seam' (2014). We will aim to have some devices but if you can it would be useful to download the app onto a device - app costs about €3.50
