The event

Paul Hopkins and Kevin Burden from the project presented a paper on eBooks and led a teacher education symposium for at the conference.

Teacher Education Symposium

As part of the 2nd biennial International iPad in Higher Education Conference Kevin Burden and Paul Hopkins from the University of Hull organised  a dedicated teacher education symposium that focused on the use and impact of mobile devices, like the iPad, on teacher educators and their students and promoted the MTTEP project. The main focus of the symposium was to address the following questions which led into a statement produced by the symposium organisers which formed the basis of an academic journal article in a special edition of a leading international journal. .

The questions that formed the basis of the symposium were;
  1. How are schools, colleges and universities currently using mobile technologies?
  2. How does the use of mobile technologies like this challenge current understandings and ideas about teaching and learning?
  3. What are the implications of these challenges for teacher educators and for the preparation of new and existing teachers?

eBooks and Teacher Education

Paul Hopkins presented a paper on eBooks looking at how these change both the resource and pedagogic landscape. He looked at the affordances of the eBook:
  1. Flexibility of Content: a range of multi-media elements can be incorporated into the book;
  2. Adaptability: How the book can be "never finished" and be open to multi-authorship;
  3. Interactivity: How you can build interactive elements into the eBook;
  4. Data Capture: How you can add data into the book and get data from the user (and the users).

Networking

About 50 people came to the symposium and interest was generated in developing the network across wider Teacher Education networks.
